Message from the Herkimer County Legislature for the New Year
December 30, 2020
As we near the end of this historic year and the number of positive covid19 cases increase at alarming rates, it's very critical that we continue to adhere to social distancing practices.
With the year 2021 looming, we are met with the hope of ending this pandemic with the release of the vaccines from two pharmaceutical companies with more to follow. However, we would be remiss to not mention the dire situation that our community is facing.
As you have noticed Herkimer County is in substantial, community transmission of COVID-19. Hospitals are extremely full with a record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations to match the record number of cases that we are seeing. Much of what we are seeing is thought to be due to the holiday traveling and gatherings from Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Vaccination for the mass population is still months away. Many of our residents can be hospitalized or lose their lives to COVID-19 in that time frame. We need you to help a slow down and reverse the trajectory we are on.
Many in the community are used to ending the year and ringing in the new one with festive celebrations. However, this year is different due to Covid.
We ask that if you intend on celebrating the New Year, that you surround yourself with small groups and avoid large party gatherings. Know the people around you and try not to celebrate with people you don't know.
Many of the positive cases have been traced back to large groups both in the private and public sector. Therefore, the best advice is to be smart and stay apart!
Please do the following:
*WEAR YOUR MASKS IN PUBLIC
*DO NOT GATHER WITH THOSE OUTSIDE OF YOUR
IMMEDIATE FAMILY OR BUBBLE
* WATCH YOUR DISTANCE FROM OTHERS (AT LEAST SIX
*WASH YOUR HAND FREQUENTLY
We know these actions work and it is critically important that we all do our part to fight this virus.
On behalf of myself and the Herkimer County Legislature, we hope you all have a prosperous and healthy new year!
