October 30, 2023
Press Release
The 2023 update of the Herkimer County Hazard Mitigation Plan is available for public review. The goal of the Hazard Mitigation Plan is to save lives and property by reducing future impacts of hazard events such as flooding, severe storms, severe winter storms and wildfire in the county. During the mitigation planning process, county and local leaders worked in together to identify risks, assess capabilities, and develop a strategy to reduce hazard vulnerability.
The Hazard Mitigation Plan is required by state and federal agencies for communities in Herkimer County to be eligible for pre-disaster mitigation funding to reduce hazard risk. The plan is found online at Explore the Plan - Herkimer County Hazard Mitigation Plan (herkimercountynyhmp.com). The website also provides project updates, resources relating to the plan update.
Public and stakeholder participation and feedback is a vital part of the hazard mitigation planning process. The public review period is open until November 30th. All comments provided will be reviewed and incorporated into the final plan as appropriate. Contact John Raymond, Director of Emergency Services at jraymond@herkimercounty.org with any questions.
