Free Water Testing for Private Homeowner Wells Impacted by Flooding in Herkimer County

The New York State Department of Health is offering free well water testing through December 31, 2019 for wells that have been impacted by the October 31 flooding.

After flooding, water from private wells may not be safe to drink due to contamination by waterborne pathogens (germs) that can cause serious illness in humans and pets. If you believe your well has been contaminated, stop using it immediately for any drinking or cooking purposes.

Look for signs that your well water might not be safe to drink. Rushing floodwaters can carry large pieces of debris that can dislodge parts of the well or crack the well casing, and can also deposit mud or sediment in the well. If you see any of these conditions, call a qualified professional.

If you believe your well was impacted by the storm, the state Department of Health has detailed the following steps to receive assistance:
1. Assess your well and determine if any repairs are required. If repairs are needed, contact a qualified professional, registered well driller or pump contractor to evaluate and service your well.
2. Flush and disinfect your well. You can find steps on how to flush and disinfect your well at https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/6562.pdf.
3. Sign up for the free testing program by calling the Herkimer District office at 315-866-6879.

All residents in need of immediate assistance for debris removal, and/or experiencing home damage or other issues should call 2-1-1 or 1-844-342-5211. Professional telecounselors will walk you through the process of completing the flood help intake form, and connect you with health and human services resources. You can also fill out the intake form online at http://bit.ly/UWFloodReportMV.
